§ 01 · the objection
clock time was built so people could meet. it is now used to describe how they live.
Clock time is a coordination technology. It exists so that two people, or a person and a train, can be at the same place at the same moment. For that it works, and nothing on this site proposes giving it up.
The objection is to its second job. The same count is used to describe a stretch of work, a conversation, a recovery, a Tuesday afternoon. It measures those badly. Felt duration moves with attention, arousal, emotion and the state of the body, in directions that have been measured in the laboratory for fifty years4042, and it moves furthest in exactly the people who are told most often to manage their time better44. A calendar holds the count and nothing else. Then the plan is made against the count.
That mismatch was assembled rather than discovered. Twenty-four came from an Egyptian star list2. Sixty came from Babylonian arithmetic carried forward through Greek astronomy1. The equal hour came from a machine that could not hold an unequal one5. The standard came from railway companies before it came from any government10. The second came from a caesium atom in a physics laboratory and has had nothing to do with the sky since 196716. Each step solved the problem in front of it. None of them was a finding about how a day is lived.
Decisions can be revisited. That is the whole of the argument, and the rest of this site is the evidence for it and what follows from it.
where the shared count works
Trains, surgery, court, broadcast, a call across four countries, a chemical reaction, a shift handover. Two parties have to be at one place in time, and a single agreed number is the cheapest way to get them there. Keep it. Be on time.
where it does not
How long the work took. How long the illness has been going on. Whether an afternoon was full or empty. Here the count and the experience come apart by amounts large enough to measure, and the count is the thing written down.
§ 02 · limits
what is not being claimed
stated first, not last
Appointments stay. Clocks are not a conspiracy and measurement is not a mistake. Nobody here says time is an illusion; no result on this site supports that phrasing. Nobody here ranks a pre-industrial or non-Western handling of time above this one — the cross-cultural work shows difference, and difference is not a league table52.
The claim is narrower. A tool built for coordination has become the default description of a life, that expansion was a run of choices rather than a discovery about the world, and other arrangements exist now and have existed here before.

§ 03 · the museum
